The piston rings sit in grooves around the circumference of the piston and have two key functions — they seal the combustion chamber against combustion gases escaping into the crankcase (compression rings) and ensure proper distribution and scraping of oil from the cylinder wall (oil control ring). Worn piston rings result in loss of compression, increased oil consumption, and blue smoke from the exhaust.

PRACTICAL TIP

Before installing new rings, always check that the stamped markings on the rings are facing upwards (towards the cylinder head) — installing a compression ring upside down will cause increased oil consumption and rapid wear. At the same time, measure the ring end gap in the cylinder using a feeler gauge before fitting it onto the piston.

USE / INSTALLATION / OPERATION

1. Remove the piston according to the service procedure.
2. Remove the old rings from the piston grooves — beware of sharp edges and use suitable piston ring pliers.
3. Before fitting the new rings, check the end gap of each ring in the corresponding cylinder using a feeler gauge.
4. Fit the rings onto the piston in the specified order (from the lower groove to the upper groove), observing the markings and orientation.
5. Position the gaps of the individual rings evenly around the circumference of the piston (not in a single line).

Installation requires experience with complete engine overhauls and suitable tools (piston ring pliers, feeler gauge).
