It’s no surprise that to power a computer or similar small electronics, even the smallest generator is sufficient—but even then, you should pay attention to the quality of the generator. Another general rule states that for so-called resistive appliances (from light bulbs to hairdryers and kettles), you can rely on the rated wattage and choose the generator accordingly.
The situation is different for devices with electric motors. These require a generator with a significantly higher power output than the rated wattage. This is because many devices need a much higher input power for startup—far above the value shown on their label.
The same applies to appliances with so-called commutator motors, such as grinders or drills. Here too, it is ideal to choose a generator with double the output of the device’s rated power.
Freezers, compressors, and similar devices require an even greater power surplus. In such cases, the necessary generator output may be up to ten times the value listed on the appliance.
