How to perform regular maintenance on a power generator

A power generator is a machine that is structurally quite simple, yet regular maintenance is essential. When choosing a generator, make sure that specialized service centers for your selected brand are accessible, that spare parts are readily available, and always leave repairs to professionals. So what should you do to keep your generator running smoothly for as long as possible?

Before every start

It doesn’t matter whether you start the generator once a week or every day. Before each start, you must check several basic things. The first is the engine oil level. It should reach the top edge of the oil filler opening or align with the maximum oil level mark on the container.
Next, check the condition of the air filters. This is especially important if the generator operates in a very dusty or dirty environment, such as a construction site. In such cases, the filters should be checked multiple times per day to prevent clogging and protect the engine from damage.

Cleaning the air filters

Cleaning clogged filters is fairly easy. First, remove the filter insert. Tap it gently and blow it out. Many filters also include a removable foam element, which is best washed in warm water (be cautious with flammable cleaners!), thoroughly wrung out, and left to dry. If the foam element or any part of the filter insert is damaged or cannot be cleaned, replace it.

Generator oil – when should you replace it?

Checking the oil regularly is not enough. Just like in any engine, the generator oil must be replaced. Before changing it, warm up the generator, let it sit for a moment, and change the oil while it is still warm. This ensures proper flow and effective removal of impurities.
Drain the oil using the drain screw located at the bottom of the oil tank. Don’t forget to place a sealed container underneath for the used oil. Have the new generator oil ready. If you are replacing it for the first time, the correct oil type will be listed in the service book or manual.

Regular replacement of spark plugs and filters

Spark plugs and filters should be replaced after 100 hours of operation or every 12 months (whichever comes first). Even if you have taken good care of the filters before each start, they must still be replaced within this interval. When replacing them, also clean the entire filter housing area.
