12 V / 1.2 kW starter motor for the Hahn & Sohn HDE 9300SS3 diesel generator
Not rated Rating details

The starter cranks the engine crankshaft to the speed required for the diesel fuel to ignite in the combustion chamber. In a diesel engine, this is a significantly more demanding task than in a petrol engine because diesel fuel ignites only under high compression pressure - the starter therefore has to overcome the engine's full compression, and its output is particularly important when starting at low temperatures.

  • This starter is supplied as an original replacement part for the Hahn & Sohn HDE 9300SS3 diesel generator with a single-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled 192F diesel engine with a displacement of 499 cm³. The 12 V design with an output of 1.2 kW matches the generator's battery-based electrical system and electric starting system.
  • The design is conventional: a cast aluminium front housing with mounting flange, a cylindrical stator housing with winding, and an electromagnetic switch (solenoid) mounted directly on the starter. When the key is turned, the solenoid moves the pinion into engagement with the flywheel ring gear and simultaneously closes the main contacts to allow the starting current to flow. The pinion has 8 teeth. The terminal for connecting the battery cable is copper, with two nuts for secure tightening of the power cable.

Why customers choose it

  • Original part specifically for the HDE 9300SS3 model - no uncertainty about compatibility
  • 1.2 kW output - sufficient power reserve for reliable starting even at low temperatures
  • Complete assembly including electromagnetic switch - no additional parts need to be purchased
  • Aluminium front housing with flange for precise positioning and heat dissipation
  • Copper power terminal with two nuts for a reliable connection

Practical tip

A starter that only clicks when the key is turned but does not crank is usually not the actual cause of the problem. The most common cause is a discharged or sulphated battery, or oxidised terminals and a loose power cable - the starter requires a current of several hundred amps to crank a diesel engine, and even a small amount of contact resistance at a terminal can prevent it from operating. Before replacing the starter, therefore, measure the battery voltage under load and check that the terminals and ground connection are clean and properly tightened.

The starter is genuinely faulty if it does not turn at all with a fully charged battery and good electrical connections, turns slowly even after the battery has been charged, or the pinion does not move into engagement. For generators used as backup power sources, it is advisable to keep a spare starter available - without it, the engine cannot be started and the generator will be unusable during a power outage.

  • Integrated electromagnetic switch (solenoid)
  • Cast aluminium front housing with mounting flange
  • Copper power terminal with two nuts

Use / Installation / Operation

Before replacement, switch off the generator and disconnect the negative battery terminal first. The starter power terminal is permanently connected to the positive battery terminal, so failure to disconnect the battery may result in a short circuit and damage to the wiring.

Disconnect the power cable from the copper terminal and the control wire from the solenoid, loosen the mounting flange bolts, and remove the starter. Install the new part in the same position, tighten the flange bolts evenly, and connect the control wire first, followed by the power cable. Tighten the power terminal appropriately - overtightening can easily damage the copper thread. Finally, reconnect the negative battery terminal.

After installation, check that the pinion extends and engages smoothly with the flywheel ring gear and that the engine starts without grinding or impact noises. A grinding noise during starting indicates incorrect starter positioning or a damaged flywheel ring gear - in this case, stop attempting to start the engine and have the generator inspected by a service technician.
