Connecting rod bearing (upper) – Hahn & Sohn HDE20SS3-DW

The connecting rod bearing, together with the opposing bearing shell, forms the complete bearing surface between the connecting rod and the crankshaft. Unlike the crankshaft main bearings, the connecting rod bearing carries the dynamic forces transmitted from the piston through theconnecting rod during every power stroke — it is therefore subjected to high and variable loads. A worn or damaged connecting rod bearing is indicated by characteristic engine knocking and a drop inoilpressure.

PRACTICALTIP

Before installing new connecting rod bearings, measure the crankshaft connecting rod journals with a micrometer — if they are worn beyond tolerance, the crankshaft must be reground and corresponding undersize bearingshells used.

USE / INSTALLATION/OPERATION

1. Remove the oil sump and connecting rod caps according to the service procedure.
2. Remove the old bearing shells (upper and lower) from the connecting rod and its cap.
3. Before installing the new shells, inspect and measure the crankshaft connecting rod journals.
4. Fit the new upper shell into the connecting rod so that the locating tab engages in the groove.
5. Proceed in the same way with the lower shell and cap, then tighten to the specified torque.

Installation requires experience with combustion engine servicing and precise measuringinstruments.
